Research Policy

The Clarke County Historical Association museum and archives are open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11 until 4, or by appointment. Researchers are charged a daily usage fee of $5. This fee is waived for CCHA members and citizens of Clarke County.

In response to your e-mail inquiry, we will survey four pertinent local history source books and let you know your topic or surname is referenced. There is no charge for this service. We regret that we cannot answer detailed research questions via e-mail.

A further survey of our initial findings includes 30 minutes of research time and up to 10 black and white photocopies. The fee for this service is $10, payable in advance. Payment can be by cash, check, or money order. We can also take VISA or MasterCard payments over the telephone. We do not recommend sending any credit card information by e-mail. Payment must be accompanied by your physical mailing address (snail mail).

If information is found that we feel warrants further research, we will contact you for instructions. The fees for research beyond the initial survey are $20 per hour and 25¢ per photocopy.

We are a small organization and not equipped to undertake research outside of our own archives. Winchester, Virginia, in neighboring Frederick County, has an historical society and an extensive repository of local history material in the archives of the Handley Regional Library. Prior to 1836, Clarke County was a part of Frederick County, so the answer to many of your questions may be found there. A list of fee-based researchers is available from the Handley Library Archives.

The Clarke County Historical Association depends upon the support of local residents and visitors to acquire records for our archives. If you have documents, photographs, or other records you would like to share, we would be pleased to accept (or make) a copy. Donations are cataloged and made available to researchers.
